The Need for NSF Approved Supplements
The need for supplements in sports is an avenue that is most lucrative in the dietary supplement industry. It is also one of the most criticized. When athletes are examined closely for use of enhancing substances, they often claim they thought it was a genuine dietary supplement. It therefore casts a harsh and wide glare on such products in the sports supplement industry.
Athletes are usually under huge pressure to maintain health levels and peak performance. Many athletes use sports nutrition products and supplements to keep themselves fit. Athletes, particularly in Olympics, collegiate or professional level, must be extra cautious as to which products they use as some products may contain substances that are prohibited. These may have profound ill effects on health and even result in a positive dope test. It is a nightmare for a professional athlete to be consuming a banned substance unknowingly when he/she is training for a competition.
The problem is many supplements is they do not come with correct labeling. And on top of that, the quantity of certain ingredients mentioned on the label might not be the exact amount which is actually present within your supplement. The NSF approved supplements program was made to meet the growing need and demand of coaches, athletes and others who are worried about substances that are prohibited for them to consume.
NSF international is an independent health organization, which certifies a wide range of nutritional products and dietary supplements. The NSF certified program makes athletes, coaches and sports dieticians easy to find sport nutritional products and supplements that are screened for athletic substances and steroids that are banned.
NSF certifies and tests nutritional Athlete Supplements in the National Football League, Major Baseball League, Canadian Center for Sport Ethics, Professional Golf Association and the Golf Association for women.
To certify the supplements, it has to test and ensure the following:
• Nutritional products do not contain banned substances
• Products are free from unsafe contaminant levels
• Label review and toxicology to verify marketing claims and product formulation
• Facility inspection
How it works
Compounds of different classes are screened during inspection and testing. These include over 165 steroids, narcotics, beta blockers, stimulants, diuretics, masking agents and beta-2-agonists to ensure that the athletes’ products are safe from substances prohibited by NFL, MLB, WADA and national collegiate association.
The main aim is to certify whether the participating manufacturers meet the NSF certification guidelines that are developed through a process of consensus involving sports, consumer groups and the regulatory industry. The athletes, consumers and coaches must find the products with an NSF mark to ensure that the supplement meets the guidelines.
Interestingly, professional and collegiate sports organizations are not the only ones having problems with sports supplements. As per an article published by the New York Times, the Army in the United States has also pledged to closely look at the “workout” role of supplements given at military bases where two soldiers died.
