Nanjing has a densely intertwined network of highways in the urban region with a convenient public transport and its urban transport system is fast and smooth. The city proper enjoys a framework of 15 trunk roads connecting all corners, including six north-south and nine east-west highways. It takes only 25 minutes to drive around the city by the fast track.
Nanjing is one of the six cities on the Chinese mainland with subways. Put into operation in September 2005, Nanjing Subway Line 1 traverses the north-south axis in the city proper. Subway Line 2 will pass through the east-west axis in the city proper. The South Extension of Line 1 will connect Dongshan new town and Jiangning university town, while the East Extension of Line 2 will connect Xianlin new town. All the three lines are expected to be completed and go into operation in May 2010. Currently, Nanjing has some 120 trains in operation for its subway network, about 6,000 buses and over 10,000 taxis.
