Nanjing is strong in science and technology and is also famous for software. It has won the title of “National Advanced City in Scientific and Technological Progress” for five consecutive times. The city now has 78 academicians of the China Academy of Sciences and the China Academy of Engineering, 18 State-level key laboratories, and 12 State-level engineering centres. Moreover, Nanjing also has some 30 independent R&D institutions from multinationals such as Motorola, Lucent and Oracle. In 2008, there were 11,692 patent applications and 40.23% of laboratory results from local universities and research institutions were put into production with a total contract value of 5.99 billion yuan (US$873 million).
