Nanjing has set up a complete and sound three-level medical service system of treatment, prevention and healthcare. The average life expectancy of Nanjing residents is 76.72 years. That of men is 74.44 years old while that of women is 79.12 years, close to the level of developed countries and surpassing the average in China. The city has more than 1,769 medical and sanitation institutions with more than 42,300 healthcare workers offering nearly 28,200 sickbeds. The living quarter sanitation service popularization ratio reaches nearly 100 percent and a new type of rural area cooperative medical system featuring comprehensive arrangement for serious diseases has been established in the villages. 100 percent of rural residents take part in the system.
