The History of Chess in China

  On December 76h, 1965, there was a friendship match between players of USSR and China in Beijing. In the 6 round competitions, our players got one victory, one draw and four losses.

  At that time, chess had not been developed in China for long. It was listed as one of the national competition items of board games for the first time in 1957.

  Note: Chess was called World Board Game in the past.

  At the 6th National Games, chess together with traditional I-go and Chinese chess were listed as competition items and held for men's teams and women's teams.

  Chess is a burgeoning sport in China, which has not been developed for long. It was listed as national sports items together with I-go and Chinese chess, in 1956. But it is very popular worldwide. Nowadays, there are at least several hundred million chess fans all around the world and more than 120 countries and regions have joined the World Chess Federation (FIDE for short). Chinese Chess Association became an FIDE member in 1975.
