Zhang Xuan, styled Tingxi, was a native of the present Tangquan Town, Pukou District. He passed the imperial exam at the provincial level in the 6th year of Zhengtong and became a candidate in the highest imperial examination in the next year. He held the post of Zhu Shi in Xing Bu (Ministry of Punishments). And later he worked as Ji’an Zhi Fu (magistrate of district), Guangdong You Buzhengshi. Emperor Zhu Di moved the capital of Ming to Beijing and appointed Zhang Xuan Shang Shu of Nanjing Xing Bu. “Former Residence of Shang Shu” in old times “Eight Views of Tangquan” actually referred to the house of Zhang Xuan. Zhang had a great affection for his hometown, which can be seen in his poem Visiting Huiji Temple. Zhang Xuan left us his writings – Guan’an Ji and Xiangquan Gao Liu Juan.
