Zhang Ji, styled himself Wenchang, was born in 768 A.D. in Yanchao Villiage, Linshan Township (or present Wujiang Town, Pukou District), Jiangpu County. There was a relic of the place where Zhang Ji studied but it no longer exists. He became a successful candidate in the highest imperial examination in 798 A.D. In the first year of Yuanhe, he went to Chang’an to work as the fete official of Taichangsi. Later he held the posts of Mishulang, Guozi Zhujiao, Guozi Boshi, ministry councilor of Shui Bu (Ministry of Water Conservancy) and Guozi Siye. He was the student of Han Yu and friend of Bai Juyi. He left eight volumes of Siye Collected Works. In his late years, he lived in seclusion in Suzhou. Zhang Ji died in 830 A.D. at the age of 62.
