Jiangpu Wenmiao Temple situated the Dongmen Street of Zhujiang Town, Jiangpu County, is at the foot of the Phoenix Hill in the northeast corner of the county. Wenmiao Temple is a place where the Confucius, the master of all ages, is worshipped. The temple was named after the Confucius who was canonized as Monarch Wenxuan (wen means civil). It forms a perfect match with the Wumiao Temple of Guan Yunchang, who pursued kindheartedness and justice (wu means military). According to the county annals, by the 24th year of Hongwu (1391), the Wenmiao Temple complex had almost formed its complete scale. The Dacheng Hall was in the center, with the East Wu (corridor) and West Wu on two sides. Jiqi (sacrificial utensil) Storeroom was on the left hand side while Zhaibi (ablution) Room was on the right. Jimen Gate was in front of the Dacheng Hall. And Xiangxian Ci (ancestral hall) was located to the right of the gate. In front of the Jimen Gate were Lingxing Gate and Weipin Gate. In the middle, there was a pool, with a screen wall on its south. This structure was carried on in the Qing Dynasty, which was usually arranged as follows: the screen wall, pool, Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall and Chongsheng Hall standing in a line from the south to the north. The temple had undergone ups and downs since being moved to Kuangkou Hill in 1391. Many of the buildings had been rebuilt or rehabilitated during different periods, such as Xuande, Tianshun, Chenghua, Hongzhi, Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang. By the time of Xianfeng Period of the Qing Dynasty, most buildings of the complex were ruined during wars. Later in Guangxu Period, the Qing Government rehabilitated Jiangpu Wenmiao Temple but the scale was no longer complete, leaving only Dacheng Hall, two corridors, Jimen Gate and walls. In the 60 years after, this complex was kept basically intact. Later, the Jimen Gate and two corridors were destroyed. In the middle of 1950s, there was only a Dacheng Hall in the Wenmiao Temple, which was used as grain depot and rehearsal room for a troupe in succession. It once became a place for fighting during the Cultural Revolution. Afterwards, it became the paint baking shop for a wireless factory and was altered into a warehouse by a transformer factory. In May of 1998, the county Bureau of Cultural Affairs submitted proposals on rehabilitating the Wenmiao Temple to Wenxian County Government. Soon, this proposal won the support of the CPC County Committee, County Government and Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics. The Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics appropriated a fund of 200,000yuan and the County Government collected a sum of 600,000yuan for the temple. Now it has already regained its original majestic appearance.
